Wholesale Foundations for Product Brands
Wholesale means selling your product by the case to a business that resells it. You quote a wholesale price, usually around half of the retail price. The buyer marks it up, puts it on a shelf, and carries the risk of it not selling. That single change rewrites how you operate: case packs instead of single units, purchase orders instead of checkout carts, net terms instead of instant payment, and a barcode, a resale certificate and a price list that buyers ask for before they place an order.
The decisions that matter come early. Set your wholesale price before you set retail, not after, because a retail price built on direct margins leaves no room for a reseller and you cannot quietly raise it later. Decide your minimum order in cases, not dollars. Keep one price list rather than improvising per buyer. Do not treat your first wholesale account as a favor to a friendly store owner: the terms you give them become the terms every later buyer hears about.
The counterintuitive part is that wholesale margin looks worse per unit and is usually better per hour. Founders compare the two prices and conclude wholesale is a loss. The comparison is wrong, because no wholesale order carries ad spend, returns handling or customer support. The real trap is cash: you fund the inventory, ship it, and wait thirty days or more to get paid, so a run of good orders can empty your bank account faster than a bad month.
Twenty guides here. Start with the plain-English explanation of wholesale, then the distributor versus wholesaler versus retailer breakdown so you know who you are talking to. Read what buyers check before stocking a new brand, and the pieces on licenses, barcodes and how much inventory you need before a first order.
