How to Sell to Specific Retailers
Selling to retailers is not one process. Each chain has its own door. A national chain has category buyers who review a section on a fixed calendar, a supplier portal, insurance and compliance requirements and a case pack they expect you to match. An independent store has an owner who can decide on the spot. Regional grocers often buy through local programs first. Off-price chains buy overstock opportunistically. Same product, four different pitches.
Pitch the wrong person and nothing happens at all. The decisions that separate a yes from silence are mundane: knowing which buyer owns your category, arriving inside that category's review window, quoting a case pack the store can actually shelve, and proving you can supply every door they would put you in. Sending a national chain a pitch written for a gift shop reads as homework not done.
The counterintuitive part is that the biggest retailer is usually the worst first customer. A national order can cost more than it earns once slotting, freight allowances, chargebacks and the inventory you financed are counted, and a weak first season gets you delisted. The trap is chasing the logo. Independent stores pay faster, reorder sooner, and build the sell-through record a chain buyer will ask you for.
If you want the fastest first yes, start with the independent channels: gift shops, garden centers, coffee shops and museum stores. If you are ready for a chain, read the Walmart, Target and Costco guides for the portal, case-pack and margin expectations, and the Whole Foods guide for how a local listing grows into a regional one.
